Kew is part of Melbourne's golden triangle of power, influence and moola. It is a wealthy suburb where grand homes in wide streets, and respectable and snooty neighbours predominate. Image and standing in the community are important here so if you want to impress, tell your neighbours you are a high profile incredibly successful barrister, a brain surgeon, or related to Queen Liz. You would feel quite out of place living in Kew if your politics are left leaning and firmly believe in self composting toilets. So don't go putting up any solar panels on your roof or praying to any sun god.
Kew is a quiet neighbourhood where peace of mind, and minding your own business are cherished. There are plenty of Victorian and Art Deco homes here but they would be among the most expensive to buy too. Anything under $1million would be considered a bargain. Kew is totally rich people's territory with a very good selection of private schools.
The local shopping centre is charming and very self contained, no need to go much beyond the boundaries and certainly no need to venture beyond the blue ribbon territory, or heaven forbid, into the wild west on the other side of the Yarra River and all the rif raff that lives there.
