South Yarra
South Yarra
Melbourne's upmarket cafe, restaurant and shopping destination. Oh so chi chi.

South Yarra, Melbourne (inner south east)

South Yarra is the designer shopping mecca of Melbourne. It tends to attract skinny things, blondes (fake and natural), people into chi chi who have moola, and love to be seen. It is an affluent, safe, stylish, expensive, beautiful suburb close to the city centre and borders the Botanic Gardens. It largely appeals to professionals. You won't see much, if any, riff raff or doof doofers here. Hooray. (More information below and to your left <<<)

Chapel Street and Toorak Rd in South Yarra have block after block after block of shops and cafes. So shopaholics will have a great time checking this place out. South Yarra also has a couple of cinemas. More mainstream films screen at the Jam Factory in Chapel St. Arty movies dominate at the Como Centre (cnr Toorak Rd and Chapel St).

The architecture here is mostly well kept Victorian terraces and larger homes, with a good number of art deco apartment blocks, and flats that were built in the 1960s and 1970s. It means South Yarra is a densely populated suburb. The historic Como House mansion is in South Yarra. It's managed by the National Trust. For good examples of well preserved architecture, head to Park St, Alexandra Pde along the Yarra River, Caroline St, Darling St, Domain Rd and Toorak Rd West.

But not all who live here are super well off. There is a public housing block of flats here too.

The Prahran Market, or yuppie market, is on Commercial Rd in South Yarra. It's a great market with some of Melbourne's best produce all under one roof.
