Coogee
Coogee Beach on a quieter day. This suburb has a relaxed beach culture. It's popular with families, travellers and professionals.
Coogee, Sydney (east)
Coogee is a great place to live. It's a smaller, friendlier, nicer version of Bondi, without the attitude. There are lots of UNSW students spilling over from Randwick, living shoulder-to-shoulder with families, yuppies and backpackers. The beach can get pretty crowded on hot days, but there’s always room for one more towel to squeeze in between the beach volleyball players, the tanned local kids, and the Irish family on holidays. (More information below and to your left <<<)
The hilly streets and plethora of apartments mean there are plenty of opportunities for a home with an ocean view. And the housing comes in a wide range of period styles and quality.
The strip of shops and restaurants opposite the beach is pretty lively all-year round, but tends to peak mid-summer when the tourists and inland Sydneysiders descend. It doesn’t have Bondi’s vibrant attitude, but on the upside, you won’t feel out of place if you’re not wearing this season’s funkiest sunglasses.
Street parking can be a bit of a trial in the high density area at the bottom of Coogee Bay Rd, but there are plenty of buses to the city. The vibe: beach holiday - dripping ice-creams, sandy feet and tap beer. Shoe equivalent: Worn-in thongs – and not the new-fangled modern sort, either. Would suit: outgoing people aged 18+ who aren’t fashion victims, singles, professionals, families, students, long term travellers. Location: beach, near UNSW. Postcode: 2034. Distance: 7.5km from the city centre. Direction: South East.
