Parramatta
Parramatta
Parramatta is one of Sydney's oldest settlements

Parramatta, Sydney (west)

Parramatta is the business and retail hub of western Sydney. Sure, it’s a fair way out from the city centre (about an hour by car, less via the motorway), but Parramatta has great ethnic diversity; a good arts scene; a vibrant café strip; plenty of heritage; the picturesque Parramatta River; and a pleasant, large shopping district. This is where cosmetics giant Napoleon Perdis was born into a migrant Greek family. Parramatta is a very down to earth place with relatively cheap rent compared to Sydney's inner suburbs. The suburb is huge and has plenty of schools; a university campus; hotels; tree-lined streets; and is just over an hour to the Blue Mountains.

Two of Australia's oldest buildings can be found in Parramatta - Old Government House and the Governor's Dairy. Parramatta was home to Australia's first farm, first orchard, first vineyard, first steam mill and first market place and fair. History abounds here.
