Randwick
Home to the Randwick Racecourse, a university, hospitals, students and families
Randwick, Sydney (east)
Randwick is a sprawling suburb with landmarks like Randwick Racecourse, Centennial Park, the University of New South Wales and a number of hospitals. There’s plenty of accommodation in the area, both short and long term. In parts it’s wall to wall apartment blocks, but elsewhere – towards North Randwick – there are pleasant leafy streets with Federation homes. Property prices here can be high. (More information below and to your left <<<
)
It’s not the most glamorous of suburbs, but it’s very functional and convenient. There are two hubs to the area - Belmore Road is lined with shops, banks, real estate agents, etc, while the St Pauls Rd / Perouse Rd intersection is the entertainment quarter. This corner is known to all and sundry as ‘The Spot’, and it’s chock-full of restaurants, cafes, bookstores and a cinema offering cheap-ish tickets. This area has a great community/relaxed vibe about it. There are lots of young people about, but they’re more likely to be a hospital registrar or a Malaysian PhD student, than an Irish backpacker.
If you’re looking for a raucous good time or inner-city style, Randwick is not the place for you. But if you’re just happy to be surrounded by smart young people and the unpretentious getting on with life, you couldn’t do better.
