East Melbourne is a haven for the cultural and intellectual elite and those who want to live near happening spots, but not in them. Some have little children, others just plenty of taste and art. East Melbourne also has a large number of younger people who are renting and don't have big bank accounts.

This inner city suburb is surrounded by parkland. It is walking distance from the city centre, Smith St in Collingwood, Brunswick and Gertrude streets in Fitzroy, Victoria St in Richmond and all its Vietnamese restaurants, and the hallowed ground itself, the MCG (venue for Aussie Rules Football and cricket).

East Melbourne does not have its own village centre, but does have a good coffee shop or two and a couple of big hospitals.

The streets are mostly wide and tree-lined, with plenty of Victorian terraces, and a few 1940's era flats. In recent years, big apartment blocks have gone up, aka warehouse conversions, and tend to be confined to the Victoria Pde end.

Parking here is impossible on weekends when there is a football match at the MCG. The vibe: Kundera and classical music. Shoe equivalent: Designer slippers. Would suit: professionals, singles, executives. Location: Parks, inner city. Distance: 1km from city centre. Direction: East.
