Hawthorn
Hawthorn
A very safe upper middle class suburb popular with families, executives and Swinburne University students.

Hawthorn, Melbourne (east)

Hawthorn is a large, almost eclectic suburb. It has executives and upper middle class families who live in big houses and send their kids to posh private schools; and it has a university (Swinburne), plenty of students, a couple of cool cafes, cheap Asian food, blocks of apartments, and great public transport. It's niether stuffy nor grungey but a pleasant midway between both, so go check it out. (More info below and to your left <<<)

Hawthorn has some jaw droppingly beautiful houses and streets. It is a very safe suburb that has always been a magnet for professionals and executives. And that explains all the furnishings stores and couture wedding gown shops, not to mention the very high property prices, especially along Yarra Park in the west and Grace Park estate.

Hawthorn isn't wowser territory but it does have plenty of churches, parks and gardens, tree-lined streets, and it is close to some very good private schools. Rather!

Once upon a time, Hawthorn had a big brick making industry. Those brick pits then became tips, and are now fab parks.

There are several shopping strips, but the main one is Glenferrie Rd. Here you can find pretty much anything you may want and there is plenty to choose from in terms of restaurants and cafes, books and clothes. Because of the large student population, there are several pubs offering cheap meals and a good atmosphere. There is good ethnic diversity here too.

And Hawthorn has an Aussie Rules football team, they're the Hawthorn Hawks. Team colours are yellow and brown. Gross!

Yes, it is a good suburb. Go for it.
