Collaroy
A long stretch of sand, and plenty of opportunity to surf, swim and boogie board.
Collaroy, Sydney (northern beaches)
Collaroy is middle class suburbia by the sea with fab views. The streets are hilly, the houses are large and varied, and the small shopping village has its own cinema. This place exudes an air of being on summer holidays. It is extremely pleasant, safe, clean and has a great surf beach. It's also very close to the Narabeen Lakes. Collaroy is a chilled out place with an emerging ethical conscience. (More information below and to your left <<<)
There are two small shopping areas; the older one comes with its own cinema. Recently, some upmarket homewares shops have opened up to cater for the changing demographics. There are some good cafes serving organic coffee, and there is the Famous Pie Shop which travellers and locals love to stop by for a refill. For the big shopping experience, the Warringah Mall is not too far away.
Accommodation-wise, if you like backpacking there is a good youth hostel in Collaroy. But essentially, this is family-home territory. On the architectural front brick homes predonimate, some are older style, some are designer style and in recent years modern apartments have gone up. The streets are tree-lined and can be very hilly, but the pay off is stunning views. Collaroy is one of the few suburbs left in this part of Sydney that has not been totally yuppiefied, but alas, that too is changing.
Public transport is by bus only but there are plenty of services. Parking is not a problem. The vibe: surf, swim and boogie board. Shoe equivalent: thongs and flippers. Would suit: families. Postcode: 2097 Location: Northern Beaches. Distance: 18km from city centre. Direction: north east.
