Newtown
Victorian cottages and terraces abound. Professors and students, professionals, gays, migrants, and welfare recipients all call Newtown home.
Newtown, Sydney (inner west)
Put on your sneakers and get lost in cosmoplitan Newtown. King Street, the main drag, is very long and is filled with endless cafes, and shops selling retro clothes, cool clothes, underground records, gothic gear, books and potions. Professionals live side by side with students, pierced ones, gays, straights, and migrants. Newtown is Sydney’s grunge capital and a cultural kaleidoscope. You'll either love it... or not. From the moment you arrive at Newtown train station, expect to be greeted by a homeless person asking for money. But with so many interesting shops, by the end of your walk up King St, YOU’LL be begging for money after maxing out on your credit card. The southern end of Newtown has undergone a revival recently and has some of the best, cool and retro cafes and shops in Sydney.
Newtown offers live drag shows every Friday-Sunday at The Newtown Hotel (corner King and Watkin Sts). Or if you're short of cash, just take a seat at one of the dozens of cafes and watch the entertainment pass you by. It has an art-house cinema, cocktail lounges, restaurants and cafes serving food from around the world, eccentric specialty stores, and a jazz bar.
Newtown has plenty of Victorian cottages and terraces. It’s also seen a boom in apartments in recent years, among them warehouse conversions. In recent years, more young families have been moving in. But if you are expecting cheap property, forget it!
