Surry Hills
Victorian terraces, tree lined streets and some of the best cafes in Sydney
Surry Hills, Sydney (east)
This is the place black clad, bright young things like to hang out. And why wouldn't they? Surry Hills is like a slice of Melbourne in the centre of Sydney. It's got plenty of great bars and cafes. Once very working class, rough, and the centre of the rag trade, Surry Hills has been gentrified attracting the moneyed, cool, creative types with a social conscience. But Surry Hills is not a domain exclusively for black clad trend setters. The grit is still there, so are some old time residents and public housing tenants.
With inner city gentrification, fortunes took another turn for Surry Hills and these days, it is definitely the cool suburb. It has plenty of warehouses converted into apartments, Victorian terraces that have been renovated, a huge number of great cafes and restaurants, plenty of small independent shops, bookstores, collectables, antique stores, pubs and bars. Surry Hills has a vibrant feel, day and night. And if you like community type markets, Surry Hills has one of those too - on the first Saturday of every month.
It is easy walking distance to the city centre; to Sydney’s main train station - Central Station; and to several other vibrant suburbs in Sydney’s east.
